Reuse Your Jewellery in Toronto — Heirloom Redesign

Reusing jewellery is one of the most meaningful ways to create something new while preserving what matters most.

At Posy Fine Jewellery, we specialize in heirloom redesign, the process of transforming your existing gold and gemstones into custom pieces that reflect your story, style, and everyday life. Whether you’re working with inherited jewellery, unworn pieces, or materials that hold sentimental value, we help you reimagine them into something you’ll wear and love for years to come.

Why Reuse Your Jewellery?

Reusing jewellery isn’t just about making something new, it’s about keeping the meaning while changing the form.

  • Preserve sentimental value by keeping original materials
  • Create something personal that reflects your style today
  • Make use of what you already have
  • Reduce waste by reworking existing gold and gemstones
  • Save on the cost of new materials

WHAT IS HEIRLOOM REDESIGN?

All of us have jewellery we no longer wear, pieces tucked away in boxes because they’re broken, the wrong size, no longer your style, or inherited but not quite right for you.

Heirloom jewellery redesign is the process of reusing those existing pieces, transforming their gold and gemstones into something new that better reflects your life and style today.

In many cases, both the metal and gemstones can be reused, allowing you to carry forward not just the material, but the meaning behind it.

Because this specialized process involves working with existing materials, it requires a higher level of care, expertise, and attention to detail. Each item must be carefully assessed to ensure it can be safely repurposed.

At Posy Fine Jewellery, we offer heirloom redesign because we believe jewellery should evolve with you, preserving its sentimental value while making it something you’ll actually wear.

If you have inherited jewellery that you are unsure of what to do with we have written about many options that may help.

What Can Be Reused (and What Can’t)

Most jewellery can be reused, but each piece needs to be carefully assessed.

Materials that can often be reused:

  • Yellow gold (the most reliable for reworking)
  • Diamonds, sapphires, and rubies
  • Gemstones 2mm or larger in good condition

Materials that may not be suitable:

  • Fragile or damaged gemstones
  • Very small stones under 2mm
  • Platinum and certain gold alloys (often better used as credit rather than reused directly)

Unlike many jewellers who only offer credit for your gold, we specialize in physically reusing your existing materials whenever possible, preserving both their sentimental and material value.

REUSE YOUR JEWELLERY

Here's How We Do It

1. Consultation

During this consultation we will refine the design details and perform an initial examination of the jewellery to be repurposed. Afterward, we will provide you with a meeting summary and quote for the project

2. Design

Once the design is approved our expert goldsmith’s will then complete a thorough examination of your jewellery to ensure that it is safe to move to the next step of carefully removing any gemstones.

3. Production

Once the design and materials to be reused are confirmed, we will move on to production. Any necessary tweaking of small details can still be made at this point.

4. Completion

Your design is cast and finished by our expert goldsmiths with careful attention to detail. Then your gemstones are expertly set. After approximately 6-8 weeks your beautiful piece is ready!

THE MEANING IS THE VALUE

This is our philosophy and the motivation for all of our work. We know the true value of jewellery is its sentimental value, not its material value.

We are one of the few jewellers in Toronto who specialize in physically reusing both gold and gemstones. The process to reuse jewellery is more labour intensive and can increase the risk of potential complications. Some may take in your gold for credit but that only reflects the material value. We know that it is important for both sentimental and environmental reasons to, when possible, physically reuse the same metal.

    FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

    Can jewellery be reused?

Yes, many types of jewellery can be reused, including gold and certain gemstones. Each piece is assessed individually to determine what is safe to repurpose.

What is the best metal to reuse in jewellery?

Yellow gold is the most reliable metal to reuse. Other metal types are best used as credit toward the new piece.

Can you change the colour of my gold?

No, we cannot change the colour of your existing gold. If you would like a different colour, new metal would need to be used.

    What gemstones can be reused?

Diamonds, sapphires, and rubies are typically the best candidates. Stones must be in good condition and usually 2mm or larger.

What happens if my jewellery can’t be reused?

If certain materials aren’t suitable for reuse, we can return them to you or apply their value as credit toward your new piece.

How long does heirloom jewellery redesign take?

Most heirloom redesign projects take approximately 6–8 weeks, depending on the complexity of the design.

Is it cheaper to reuse jewellery?

Usually but not always. Reusing jewellery is more labour intensive, so labour costs can sometimes exceed material costs, especially for designs that use minimal metal.
