The classic image that is brought to mind by the word diamond is that of a white, round, brilliant cut stone. But there is so much more to explore. Enter salt and pepper diamonds, a distinct category of gemstones distinguished by their obvious inclusions. But what are salt and pepper diamonds and why are they gaining popularity as an alternative to a traditional diamond?

What Are Salt and Pepper Diamonds?

Salt and pepper diamonds are named for their speckled appearance which somewhat resembles a mix of “salt” and “pepper”. These diamonds are characterized by numerous and obvious inclusions. Traditionally, inclusions are undesirable in a classic diamond but for a salt and pepper diamond they are very much desired. These inclusions, often black or white, “pepper” the diamond’s surface.

What are the Inclusions in Salt and Pepper Diamonds?

The inclusions that can been seen within a salt and pepper diamond are the same sorts of inclusions that could potentially be found in a classic diamond. It’s just that in a salt and pepper diamond they are visible to the naked eye. Inclusions can be made of various materials, including other minerals, crystals, or even small particles of diamond material itself. Below we go through some inclusions that can be found in diamonds.

Crystals

These are small mineral crystals trapped within the diamond during its formation. They can appear as tiny spots or specks inside the diamond.

Feathers

Feathers are fractures within the diamond that resemble tiny feathers or cracks. They can vary in size and visibility.

Clouds

Clouds are clusters of tiny pinpoints or crystals within the diamond. When clustered together, they may create a cloudy appearance within the stone.

Needles

Needle-like inclusions are long, thin crystals that resemble needles. They can vary in color and size.

Indented Naturals

These are parts of the original diamond crystal that remain embedded within the finished diamond. They can appear as small, flat areas on the diamond’s surface.

Internal Graining

Internal graining is caused by irregularities in the diamond’s crystal structure during its formation. It can appear as lines, streaks, or patterns within the diamond.

More Salt or More Pepper?

Each salt and pepper diamond is unique. They are also quite variable in appearance. Some salt and pepper diamonds can be almost black with inclusions and others quite transparent but with a few flecks of pepper. The inclusions can also be quite evenly distributed so that from a distance the diamond actually looks grey.

In these two rings from our shop below we can see the variation we discussed above clearly in the center diamonds. We can also see that the inclusions in the salt and pepper diamonds in the halo are distributed evenly so appear grey.

While salt and pepper diamonds were once thought to be undesirable and unsuitable for the consumer market, there has been a noticeable shift in perception in recent years. As consumers seek alternatives to conventional gemstones, salt and pepper diamonds have received attention from those who appreciate individuality and a bit of character.

Your Champagne Diamond Guide

The champagne diamond is surging in popularity. We’ve had many clients reaching out to us looking for champagne diamonds. What’s interesting to note is that different people mean different things when they refer to champagne. The colour champagne is a spectrum and sometimes it can be hard to define.

If you are interested in finding your own perfect champagne diamond it’s worth reading through this guide. If you can narrow down what you’re looking for it will make it easier for your jeweller to find it for you.

In this guide we’re going to look at colour definitions first and then go through some other key considerations when looking for a champagne diamond. Finally we’ll provide you with a quick check list that you can bring to your jeweller.

Defining the Colour

As noted above, the colour of champagne is subjective. Some people consider it to be a light brownish-yellow and others consider it to be a light brownish-pink. To help you figure out how to describe the colour you’re looking for we’ll explore the different shades of champagne below.

Champagne Diamonds from Champagne to Cognac

The most common descriptions today of the colour of champagne diamonds come from the 1980’s marketing campaigns of the Argyle diamond mine. This mine is located in Australia and had one of the largest deposits of brown diamonds in the world. The Argyle mine started marketing these diamonds as “cognac”, “chocolate” and “champagne” diamonds.

In order to differentiate between the colours of their diamonds the Argyle mine came up with the C1 to C7 colour scale. This scale is still used today to help differentiate between the different shades of champagne.

Within this scale we can see champagne colours that are light, straw yellow to brown or “cognac”, as you can see in the image below.

Champagne Diamonds from Champagne to Pink

For a description of champagne diamonds that trend more into the pinkish hues we can again refer to a colour scale produced by the Argyle diamond mine. In addition to producing champagne and cognac diamonds, this mine is perhaps most famous for producing natural pink diamonds.

A champagne diamond with a pinkish hue may be slightly more rare than one from the yellowish to brown spectrum. Diamonds that have a secondary modifying colour are a bit rarer. For example, a brown stone is less rare than a brown stone with a secondary modifying colour of pink.

The GIA has its own colour scale for yellowish brown and pinkish brown diamonds. You can take a look at their detailed breakdowns here. The more terminology or reference images you can use to show your jeweller what you’re looking for, the better.

Key Considerations

Are Champagne Diamonds Expensive?

There are very fine examples of champagne diamonds that are very expensive. But, in general, they are usually less expensive than white diamonds.

The cost is usually determined by the clarity and the saturation of the colour. We’ll look at clarity a bit more below. Saturation refers to the depth of colour in the diamond. Lighter stones will be less expensive than more saturated stones.

Also, it’s important to note that the colour of a champagne diamond is natural, meaning it has not been treated to achieve the colour. Most fancy coloured diamonds on the market have been treated with high heat to achieve the fancy colour. This means that a natural fancy blue diamond is more expensive than a treated fancy blue diamond. There is no comparable price difference in the champagne market because the colour is natural. The colour of champagne diamonds comes from structural anomalies within the crystal lattice.

Clarity Considerations

Perhaps you are already aware of the four “C”‘s of diamonds which are cut, colour, carat and clarity. The clarity of a diamond refers to how clear it is, or if any visible inclusions can be detected.

Like other diamonds, champagne diamonds may contain inclusions. An inclusion can be anything from a dark bit of carbon, noticeable fissures or a faint feather like inclusion that is barely visible to the naked eye.

A champagne diamond with visible inclusions will be less expensive than a champagne diamond that is higher in clarity. However, some inclusions can be really interesting and actually make your stone truly unique!

Champane Diamond Shapes

The shape of a diamond is not the same as its cut. The cut of a diamond refers to how well or how poorly the diamond has been facetted. The diamond shape refers to, well, its shape! For example, round, oval, pear, cushion shaped etc.

It is important to figure out what shape appeals to you because there is only a limited supply of champagne diamonds. Ideally you might want to give your jeweller two or more shapes to look for because that will increase the number of stones you can select from. For example, if you are looking for a round, white diamond there will be hundreds of stones within your budget that your jeweller can offer as options. But, if you’re looking for a specific size and shape of champagne diamond, there will only likely be a few options available.

Using the colour scales above or materials provided by the GIA, record the descriptions, terms or names of the shades you like
If possible provide an image of the champagne colours you prefer

What is the Cost to Make a Custom Engagement Ring?

Congratulations! If you are reading this you must be researching engagement rings. One of the most frequent questions we get asked is, “how much does it cost to make a custom engagement ring”? First, let’s explore average costs of engagement rings in general. Then we’ll explore topics that will affect the budget you’ll want to set aside for a custom engagement ring. If you’re exploring custom engagement rings in Toronto and trying to understand what factors influence pricing, this guide will walk you through what to expect.

How much Does an Engagement Ring Cost in Canada?

According to a wedding statistics website the average cost of an engagement ring in Canada is $3500-$6000. The global average cost of an engagement ring is between $5200-$6500. The average cost of an engagement ring in the United States is a bit higher between $5000-$7000. It will be interesting to see how the exponential increase we’ve seen in the price of gold recently will affect these averages.

These statistics are not broken down into how many of these engagement rings were bought off the shelf versus how many were custom made. It is possible to custom make an engagement ring for $3500 but more of the budget will need to be allocated to labour.

Creating an engagement ring from scratch requires more labour than reproducing many rings from the same mold. But, on the plus side, it means that you will have a unique engagement ring designed just for you!

How Much is the Average Cost of an Engagement Ring in Toronto?

There are no statistics available on average cost of an engagement ring in Toronto. A good estimate can be found by starting with the average cost in Canada and the high end of the global average. Taking these averages into account the average cost of an engagement ring in Toronto is between $3500-$6000.

Again, these average costs don’t take into account whether these engagement rings are ready-made or custom made. From our experience we agree that the cost to make a custom engagement ring averages between $3500-$6000. We ensure all of our engagement rings are heirloom quality which means they are built to last a lifetime.

Off the Shelf vs Custom Made

Typically an off the shelf engagement ring will be less expensive than a custom engagement ring. There are many companies that offer high quality ready made engagement rings. But, there are some that don’t.

When doing your research you may find websites claiming that a brick and mortar store will charge more for a similar ring that you can get cheaper online. Sometimes that is true if the ring is fairly classic in design. It is also often true when comparing two large companies, one online and one more of a mall jewellery store.

But if you’re comparing a large jewellery company to a local jeweller, the comparison is not apples to apples. Sometimes opting for the “cheaper” option means you will save money now but pay in the future. Here are a few things to consider:

Are you able to see the ring in person to ensure it is the same as you have envisioned?
Will they stand behind their product and offer a long term warranty?
Do they offer repairs and resizing on their own work?
How difficult is it to contact the company when there is a problem or a repair is required?
How will you maintain your ring over time if you aren’t able to bring it somewhere to have regular assessments and cleanings?

Making an Informed Decision on the Cost to Make a Custom Engagement Ring

When making a large investment it makes sense to do your own research. Topics to consider that will help you to make an informed decision about your engagement ring budget are: design requirements, materials desired, quality craftmanship and reputation.

Design Requirements

How do the design requirements affect your engagement ring budget? First, if you are able to find what you want, and it already exists as a finished product, then that simplifies the amount you’ll need to set aside.

But what if what you’re looking for doesn’t exist? In this case you’ll want to create a custom engagement ring. As we discussed above there is more labour involved when creating a custom ring from scratch.

While we strive to work with all budgets, a the typical cost to make a custom engagement ring will start at $1800 for a solitaire design, not including any gemstones. The value of this investment will repay itself in time because your ring will have been created by trained goldsmiths, using the highest quality materials, to last a lifetime.

Materials Desired

If you have very specific materials in mind that you would like to use in your engagement ring this will also help you to establish the budget for your engagement ring. For example, if you would like a 2 carat oval blue sapphire set in 18k yellow gold it would be a good idea to do some research on rings that use these materials and figure out an average cost.

After you’ve figured out the average cost you may decide to create a custom engagement ring using your preferred materials. One of the best parts of creating a custom engagement ring is that you are able to see gemstones in person so you can select your favourite.

We find that the gemstone selection and final decision becomes an integral part of the proposal story. Choosing your own gemstones adds a level of personal connection that just can’t be found with an off the shelf engagement ring.

Quality Craftmanship

There are many commercial companies that create engagement rings of excellent quality and craftmanship. They will tend to be more expensive than others because they’ve put thought into the design, used the highest quality materials and employed skilled trades people in the production. Beware of an engagement ring deal that seems too good to be true. It probably is.

To maximize your budget but also ensure quality craftmanship you can use a balance of priorities. A large company will have a large overhead whether it’s primarily an online company or not. By necessity these companies will need to factor in their overhead into their cost. A smaller company that also produces engagement rings with thoughtful design, the highest quality materials and employs skilled trades people will have a smaller overhead. The overhead at a smaller company will still be factored into the cost but the amount will be smaller.

The cost to make a custom engagement ring will always be more because there is more time and skilled labour involved. But an additional benefit of creating a custom ring is that you will be involved in the selection of the materials so you can ensure you’re getting the best options.

There are some companies that claim they do not factor in overhead into their cost at all. But, if you look closely, you will find they’ve just disguised this cost by using lower quality materials and smaller amounts of precious metal. They reduce material costs, sometimes to an amount that makes the ring non-functional, to make the ring less expensive. The result is poor craftmanship.

Reputation

The reputation of the person or company where you buy your engagement ring is another important consideration for your budget. No doubt this is a large investment you are making, maybe even one of the first large purchases you’ve made. You’ll want to make sure that the person or company you are working with is reputable.

When in doubt, check the reviews. Many companies, large and small will have reviews that you can read to get a sense of their approach to customer service and quality product. Also, you can see if they are members of any accredited industry associations or groups.

The Role of Social Pressure

There was a marketing campaign years ago that implied a person should set aside two months salary for an engagement ring. Unfortunately, this created social pressure for years on the amount that should be spent on an engagement ring. It also implied, incorrectly, that the amount spent on the engagement ring correlated to the amount a person was valued.

This rule, if it ever was a rule, thankfully no longer applies. We encourage couples to talk to each other about a reasonable budget that is affordable but will also ensure a quality engagement ring.

Our philosophy is that the meaning is the value. The true value of jewellery is its sentimental value, not its material value. This will be true for your engagement ring. It will not be about how much it cost but what it represents, the love and commitment between two people.

Fancy Colour Lab Grown Diamonds

The price point of natural coloured diamonds is not reasonable for most people. But, we have good news! More and more fancy colour lab grown diamonds are becoming available.

In recent years we’ve seen the explosion in popularity of lab diamonds. Factors such as an increasingly knowledgeable public, wider market availability, and competitive pricing attribute to the rising popularity. What are Fancy Colour Lab Grown Diamonds?

People typically use the term fancy diamond to describe a coloured diamond. Sometimes it can also refer to a diamond that has obvious inclusions such as salt and pepper diamonds. The term fancy diamond can refer to both natural coloured diamonds and lab grown coloured diamonds.

Lab grown diamonds are chemically identical to natural, earth-mined diamonds. They are graded using the same scale as earth-mined diamonds. Even professionals can’t tell the difference between natural and lab created diamonds unless they have access to expensive equipment.

What Creates the Colour in Diamonds?

If a diamond contains only pure carbon then it will be colourless, or a D colour on the diamond grading scale. In nature, trace elements or defects in the crystal can create the colour. For lab diamonds those trace elements or defects are purposely introduced.

Blue Lab Grown Diamonds

Boron, when incorporated into the diamond structure of either a natural or lab diamond, imparts a blue colour. The concentration of boron dictates the intensity of the blue, with lower levels creating light blue hues and higher concentrations deep, saturated blues.

Yellow Lab Grown Diamonds

The presence of nitrogen in a natural diamond crystal lattice results in a yellow hue. Or sometimes it can also be more of an orange. If nitrogen is introduced during the growth process of a lab grown stone, scientists can produce diamonds ranging from pale yellow to strong orange.

Pink Lab Grown Diamonds

Irradiation and subsequent annealing can create green and pink colours in lab-grown diamonds. The controlled exposure to radiation alters the crystal lattice, resulting in these distinctive hues. Natural diamonds can also undergo radiation in the Earth’s mantle, leading to similar colouration.

Colour Enhanced Diamonds

Rather than a natural cause, enhancement is responsible for the colour found in most fancy diamonds on the market today. This enhancement process is the same for both natural and lab grown diamonds. Using an electronic beam or high heat enhances the diamond and creates the colour.

Consistency in colour is still a problem when using enhancements. It can be difficult to predict what colours these enhancements will produce.

Controlling the complex environment necessary to produce fancy colour lab grown diamonds can be challenging. Often an unintended colour will be produced in the diamond. On the other hand, this leads to many unique colours!

How Rare are Coloured Diamonds?

A fancy colour diamond is more rare whether it is lab created or earth mined. Natural fancy coloured diamonds are the rarest, and because of their rarity, are the most expensive. Technology to purposefully create colour in natural diamonds through enhancement has been around for many years. As a result, there is a wide availability of inventory of fancy colour earth mined diamonds.

Unfortunately, there isn’t the same kind of inventory available in fancy coloured lab diamonds. The manufacturers have prioritized filling the demand for colourless lab diamonds and are only just starting to create coloured lab diamonds.

What Colours are Available?

Techncially, the same variety of colours that are available for natural enhanced fancy coloured diamonds should be available for lab grown. Those colours include canary yellow, burnt orange, rusty red, dark green, apple green, mint green, aqua blue, teal blue, pink and greyish purple.

As we will see below, the availablity of all of these colours for lab created diamonds is still not at the level of their natural counterparts.

Rarest Colours

The rarest colours of lab grown diamonds are vivid red, intense green and black. In the cases of vivid red and intense green, these colours are also exceptionally rare in nature. Black diamonds, however, are widely available via enhancement of natural material. There are no black lab grown diamonds on the market because of the widespread availability of natural black diamonds and their low price point.

Red Lab Grown Diamonds

The enhanced options available for red diamonds tend to be a rusty-red colour, more similar to the colour of a garnet. It is exceptionally rare to get a vivid red diamond whether it’s natural, enhanced or a lab grown diamond.

The introduction of structural defects or deformities during the growth process can produce diamonds with rare purple and red colors. These hues are among the most coveted in the world.

Green Lab Grown Diamonds:

The enhanced options for green diamonds tend to be either a forest, apple or mint green rather than an intense green. A true green is uncommon in any kind of diamond.

Are Fancy Colour Lab Grown Diamonds Available in Toronto?

Fancy lab grown diamonds are slowly entering the market. Although supply is still limited, we are starting to see some options for our Toronto clients. We’ve seen yellow, pink, champagne and light blue.

The yellow diamonds we’ve seen have ranged from pale yellow to canary yellow. In blue we’ve seen light blue to very pale blue. Finally, in pink we’ve seen variations from champagne to light pink.

If you’re interested in a coloured lab diamond, we suggest staying open to size and shape. Because supply is still limited, there are only so many shapes and sizes available in each colour.

What about Fancy Melee Options?

Melee diamonds are what jeweller’s call small diamonds. There is no hard and fast rule as to when a diamond is small enough to be referred to as melee. Usually melee is considered 3mm and below.

As with their larger counterparts, small coloured lab diamonds are still quite rare. Enchanced natural coloured options are widely available. It will take time but, eventually, there will no doubt be equal availability of fancy colour melee lab grown diamonds.

Design Options

At Posy Fine Jewellery, we are fans of tone on tone. A champagne or pink diamond in rose gold is so swoony. Or the crispness of a pale blue diamond in white gold. Yellow diamonds in yellow gold is also so satisfying.

As fancy colour lab grown diamonds become more available, more design options will open up. As we noted in our introduction, large natural coloured diamonds are just out of reach for most people. In the past this has meant that people who like the look and style of coloured diamonds have had to settle for something else. Thankfully, that’s beginning to change.

Fancy Colour Lab Grown Diamond Engagement Rings

As of right now, it will be hard to find a fancy colour lab grown diamond engagement ring in a retail store. You will have more luck if you opt for a custom engagement ring. We will bring in different diamond options for you to see in person so you can select that one that speaks to you. After the stone selection you will be able to customize every detail of the ring to your personal preferences.

A custom engagement ring involves more labour and therefore is more expensive than an off the shelf option. However, this is the ring that you will be wearing for the rest of your life. It’s important that you get what your heart desires and that it is built to last. You will find that your investment pays for itself over time through the joy that it brings you and the craftsmanship that went into its durability.

Diamond Basics: A No-Nonsense Guide

So, you’re thinking about getting yourself a diamond, but you’re feeling a bit overwhelmed with all the “Cs” – cut, carat, clarity, and colour. Don’t worry, we’ve got your back. In our diamond basics guide we’re going to break down what you really need to know about the 4C’s of diamonds. We’re also going to look into how the 4C’s (Cut, Carat, Clarity and Colour) relate to lab-grown diamonds because we know you have questions.

Diamond Cut: The Sparkle Factor

First up, let’s talk about the “cut.” The cut of a diamond isn’t about its shape (like round, cushion, or pear). It’s about how well that diamond has been cut from the rough stone. The cut affects the diamond’s sparkle, and that’s what is really most important. In fact, we would argue that the cut is the most important “C” of the “4C’s”! The better the cut, the more light reflection you will get from your diamond.

Above is a summary graph of the GIA scale of diamond cuts. We recommend staying in the Excellent to Very Good range. From time to time you may also see diamond cuts described as ideal or super ideal. You may also come across other terms used to describe diamond cuts. These are all cut names that have been branded by companies. The highest cut grade is what we call triple excellent which refers to a diamond that has been graded excellent on cut, symmetry and polish by GIA.

These cut grades are applicable to modern brilliant cut diamonds and do not apply to older cut styles such as old mine cut or old European cut diamonds.

Diamond Cuts and Lab Grown Diamonds

Lab grown diamonds are graded using the exact same scale as earth mined diamonds. The grading reports will come from labs such as IGI, GCAL and now also GIA. The vast majority of lab grown diamonds are cut to either excellent or very good grades. We would recommend an excellent cut for your lab grown diamond.

Diamond Carat: The Size Factor

Next up in our diamond basics is carat. A lot of people think that carat refers to the size of the diamond. It does not. It refers to the weight of the diamond, measured in “carats”. The weight measurement for diamonds actually came from placing carab seeds on one side of a scale versus diamonds on the other. The cost was determined by on how many carab seeds equaled the weight of the diamond.

So, for example, a one carat diamond will not have a standard measurement in millimeters. For a properly cut stone, a one carat diamond can usually range in size from 6.3-6.6mm. As a basic rule, the larger the carat size, the larger the diamond.

Diamond Carats and Lab Grown Diamonds

Because lab grown diamonds and earth mined diamonds are chemically identical, they weigh the same. So a carat weight of a lab grown diamond will be equivalent to a carat weight of an earth mined diamond. But, since lab grown diamonds have such a great price point, you will likely get more carats for your budget with a lab grown.

Clarity measures the tiny imperfections, or “inclusions,” inside the diamond. Think of these inclusions as the diamond’s natural birthmarks. They’re like its unique fingerprint. Clarity is graded from “Flawless” (no inclusions) to “Included” (inclusions you can see with the naked eye).

We recommend staying in the range between Flawless and SI1. Flawless and Internally Flawless are quite rare, so if you’re looking for a very clean stone then you’ll be fine with anything in the VVS1 to VS2 range. If you’re looking for a better price point you can also consider diamonds with a clarity grade of SI1. The category of SI is the lowest you can go in the clarity range before you can see the inclusions with your naked eye. We find that the inclusions in the SI1 category are usually less significant than the inclusions in the SI2 category.

Recently, heavily included diamonds have actually become quite popular. They have been rebranded as salt and pepper diamonds.

Diamond Clarity and Lab Grown Diamonds

Due to the fact that lab grown diamonds are made in a controlled environment, they typically don’t have as many inclusions as earth mined diamonds. Lab grown diamonds, on average, usually have a clarity grade between VVS1 and SI1.

Diamond Colour: Personal Preference

Our final “C” to cover in our diamond basics is Colour. In many ways colour is the least important of all of the C’s. That’s because the colour is the one “C” that gets affected by life. Diamonds love grease. Simply cooking or applying lotion will add a layer of grease to your diamond which will affect its colour. The colour of a diamond will also be affected by the build up of dirt and grit under the setting. Of course, it’s an easy enough fix to clean your diamond and have it looking like new again.

We recommend any colour between D and I or perhaps J. The one exception would be if you are planning to set the diamond in white gold or platinum. Sometimes a white metal can actually highlight the slight yellow undertone in a lower graded diamond. For white gold or platinum settings it’s best to stick with colours between D and H.

Diamond Colour and Lab Grown Diamonds

As noted above, because lab grown diamonds are created in a controlled environment, it’s easier to produce colourless material. Most Colour grades of lab grown diamonds will be in the colourless (D, E, F) to near colourless (G, H, I, J) range.

If you’re worried about committing to a coloured gemstone engagement ring, fear not. We’ll guide you through some of the concerns that often come up and give you some points to consider so you can be confident making your choice. Coloured gemstone engagement rings have long been considered an alternative to the traditional diamond ring. The question remains, is one right for you?

Addressing the Concerns about Gemstone Engagement Rings

It’s natural for people to feel hesitant about straying from the norm, especially when it comes to engagement rings. Some common concerns that come up include worries about durability, symbolism, and changes in personal preference. Addressing these concerns head-on can help ease the decision-making process.

Durability and Longevity

A main consideration when selecting the stone that will be in your engagement ring is durability. Ideally this stone will be hard enough to last a lifetime with minimal wear and tear visible on its surface. Many people opted for a diamond in their engagement ring because they are very durable and very hard. While diamonds are known for their hardness, coloured gemstones such as sapphires and rubies are also durable enough to withstand daily wear. These gems are classified using the Mohs scale, which measures their hardness. Diamonds rank at the top with a score of 10, but sapphires and rubies are not far behind with a rank of 9. The lower a gemstone is on the Mohs scale, the softer it is, so you’ll want to select a stone with at least a rank of 8 or above.

Some gemstones that would be a good choice for an engagement ring include: diamond, sapphire, ruby, alexandrite and topaz as well as their lab grown counterparts. Emeralds, although hard, can be brittle due inclusions. We recommend lab emeralds over natural emeralds because there are not as brittle.

Symbolism and Tradition

As noted above, it was common for people to select a diamond for their engagement ring due to their durability. Over time, a perceived symbolism of a diamond ring evolved and they began to be associated with timeless love and commitment. This association can be so strong that someone might not consider a ring an “engagement ring” unless it is a diamond. And so, the diamond engagement ring became traditional. But, the truth is, it could be argued that coloured gemstone engagement rings are equally as traditional. Since the custom of giving engagement rings came about coloured gemstones have been in the mix, particularly blue sapphire and ruby. Still, some people consider coloured gemstone engagement rings non-traditional. The question for yourself is, how do closely do you identify with this perceived tradition? Is it important to you, or not?

Personal Preference and Aesthetics

Finally, we’ve found that some also worry about potential regret. We’ve had clients who worry that their decision is being influenced by trends and are unsure if they will still like their ring in 10 years. Others worry that the colour of the stone in their engagement ring won’t match their wardrobe. For the first worry, no one will be able to anticipate how they will feel about their ring in the future. But, if you are having that thought, it might be a sign that you are not confident in how you feel which means you might not be ready to make your decision. For the second worry about matching clothing, we advise not giving that thought too much energy. There are no rules about being “matchy-matchy” anymore.

Now that we’ve addressed the worries, let’s explore all of the benefits that coloured gemstone engagement rings offer when compared to traditional diamond rings.

Dazzling Array of Colours

One of the most beautiful and exciting aspects of coloured gemstone engagement rings is the incredible variety of hues available. Especially now that different colours of sapphire have become so popular. Traditionally people associate sapphire with the colour blue. But did you know that sapphires are available in a whole rainbow of colours? There are even sapphires that are more than one colour which are referred to as bi-colour or parti sapphires.

Uniqueness and Rarity

There is a common held belief that diamonds are rare. But the truth is that there are many coloured gemstones that are much rarer than diamonds. Some rare coloured gemstones such as high quality colour-change alexandrite or high quality ruby are much more expensive than a similarly sized diamond.

Uniqueness is also a consideration. The difference between grades of diamonds can almost be imperceptible to the common person. Old Mine Cut Diamonds

Vintage Beauty: Old Mine Cut Diamonds

Since diamonds were discovered, people have been trying out different ways to cut them in order to create the maximum impact. Old mine cut diamonds emerged in the 18th and 19th centuries as the most advanced cutting technique of its time. Earlier methods such as the table cut and rose cut were early attempts to create facets that would reflect light. While these early cuts possess their own beauty, we have a particular attachment to the old mine cut. We’ll take a look here at the history of old mine cut diamonds as well as the distinguishing features that make this cut unique.

History

Early attempts to cut diamonds relied on the shape. The natural shape of a diamond crystal is octahedral, like two pyramids joined together at their base. Once people figured out that another diamond could cut a diamond, they used it to slice through the base of the crystal to create two rudimentary gem shaped crystals.

In time, more sophisticated methods were discovered such as the table cut. With this technique the diamond crystal would be sliced in two as before but now rough facets would be applied to the edges. From here the next evolution was the rose cut where the base would remain flat and the rest of the crystal would be facetted up to a point.

Following through, old mine cut diamonds became the next advancement in diamond cutting. Although old mine cut diamonds were the most widespread during the Georgian and Victorian eras, they do stretch over a wider time period. This is because from the 17th to early 20th century, diamond cutting was done by hand. This arduous process was made a bit easier by following the natural shape of the crystal. As a result, each old mine cut diamond was one of a kind and had a slightly elongated cushion shape.

Distinctive Features of Old Mine Cut Diamonds

Elongated Cushion Shape:

The elongated cushion shape of the old mine cut diamond is always one of a kind because each one was hand cut. The soft, rounded corners and larger facets combine to give the diamond a very unique look.

High Crown and Small Table

The crown area of the diamond refers to the material above the girdle. The high crown of an old mine cut diamond also results in the increase in depth of the entire stone. The carat weight of a old mine cut diamond will be higher vs a modern brilliant cut of comparable diameter size. Another distinctive feature of old mine cut diamonds is the small table. The table is the flat area on the top surface of the stone. Compared to modern cuts, old mine cut diamonds have a smaller table size.

Large Facets

Finally, old mine cut diamonds typically feature larger facets compared to modern cuts. These facets create the light reflection or the “fire” of the gemstone. Because the facets and the crown are larger than modern cuts, an old mine cut will often have a charming chunkier or rougher over all vintage look.

Old Mine Cut Diamonds vs Modern Diamond Cuts

Brilliant Cut Diamonds

The modern brilliant cut diamonds, also known as round brilliant, gained popularity in the early 20th century. They are known for exceptional sparkle and brilliance due to their precise symmetry, optimal proportions, and greater number of facets. Unlike the old mine cut, brilliant cut diamonds have a uniformly round shape.

European Cut Diamonds

The European cut diamonds were the next evolution after the old mine cut and were prominent in the 19th and early 20th centuries. There is also something called a transitional cut which are the stones reflecting the transition from old mine cut to European cut. A European cut has a similar number of facets to the old mine cut but it has a more uniform round shape, although not as uniform as a modern brilliant cut.

Single Cut Diamonds

Single cut diamonds are another antique cut that originated in the 17th century. They were popular during the Art Deco and Edwardian eras. Single cut diamonds feature a limited number of facets, usually only 17 or 18. They were commonly used as accent stones rather than center stones. They were also usually less expensive than modern brilliant cuts because less facets needed to be cut. However, the limited number of facets means single cuts lack the brilliance of the old mine or brilliant cut diamonds.

Use in Modern Jewellery

If you are looking for an old mine cut diamond for your jewellery piece the first thing to know is they are rare. Modern diamond cutters are not using the old mine cut method anymore. Which means there are no new old mine cut diamonds being produced. The only way to incorporate an old mind cut diamond in a new jewellery piece is to reuse an heirloom diamond. In some cases, if you’re lucky, your family will have one! If not, it will require sourcing possibilities from antique dealers or perhaps a diamond supplier who had picked one up along their travels. Hopefully now that old mine cut diamonds are becoming popular once again we will see more options in the market.

We have had the privilege to work with many heirloom old mine cut diamonds when reusing our clients jewellery. We find that old mine cut diamonds lend themselves very well to antique or vintage inspired designs. Even though the technique is old fashioned and done without machinery, you’d be surprised at how much they sparkle!

Green Sapphire Engagement Rings

Want to know what’s red hot? Green. We’re noticing a clear rise in the number of people looking for green sapphire engagement rings. Let’s take a look at the differences between shades of green sapphires as well as important tips to keep in mind if you’re searching for a green sapphire engagement ring for yourself.

Shades of Green Sapphire

Green sapphires can range in shade from a pale, minty green to a deep, forest green. Typically, green sapphires have more of an earth tone, from greenish-brown to greenish-yellow to green-ish blue.

It’s important to note that the green of a sapphire is very rarely comparable to the green of an emerald. If you are looking for a green sapphire as a substitute for emerald, it’s unlikely that you will find one.

How Important is the Cut?

Sapphires do not reflect light the same way that diamonds do so the cut is very important. To maximize the amount of light reflected you’ll want to ensure that you get the best cut possible.

Sometimes gemstone cutters will remove the least amount of material possible from the stone in order to preserve the weight. The more the stone weighs, the more expensive it is. This can result in poorly cut gemstones and sapphires.

In order to avoid a poorly cut sapphire you’ll want to ensure that you can’t see “through” the stone. The top, flat part of a gemstone is called the table. If the table is overly large, and the facets haven’t been cut properly on the bottom of the stone, it creates a “window” effect.

In general, you’ll want to ensure that your green sapphire has a very good cut and reflects light well. Each shape of sapphire will have its own ideal cut proportions.

What Colour Gold is Best for Green Sapphire Engagement Rings?

The colour of gold you select for your green sapphire engagement ring is really a personal preference.

Yellow gold compliments green sapphire very well and creates a warm, classic look. Whereas white gold may work for more of a modern, cool look. It’s probably best to avoid rose gold for green sapphire. Depending on the tone of the sapphire it might clash. Sometimes it works if you’re looking for high contrast and the green sapphire has a blue undertone.

Montana Sapphires

For the past five years or so teal sapphire engagement rings have been very popular. In part, the popularity of teal sapphires was fueled by the interest in Montana sapphires which are often teal in colour. While teal is still very much sought after, green sapphires are definitely gaining popularity in their own right.

As mentioned, Montana sapphires are often teal in colour. But they actually are available in many colours, including green. The green Montana sapphires tend to be pale green. If the undertone is blue then the sapphire will be more of a mint green. If the undertone is yellow the sapphire will be more of a pale lime green.

CARE FOR GREEN SAPPHIRE ENGAGEMENT RINGS

If you notice that your ring isn’t sparkling as much as it used to, you’ll need to give it a clean. Use water, dish soap and a toothbrush to scrub your sapphire. Don’t forget to scrub under the setting as well. Sometimes dirt and muck can accumulate on the bottom of a sapphire and form almost a type of film that is very difficult to remove. If this happens it’s a good idea to let your ring soak for a while in warm, soapy water before scrubbing with a toothbrush.

Some particularly stubborn muck may require professional cleaning. Most jewellers will provide free assessments and cleanings for life for rings they have made, we certainly do!

Engagement Ring Trends: Do they Matter?

Collectively, all of us here at Posy have been around long enough to see many engagement ring trends come and go. Around 15 years ago it was all about white gold, princess cut diamonds and bold, chunky designs. Now, we’re seeing a resurgence of yellow and rose golds as well as “fancy” shaped diamonds such as oval and pear. So how do you know if the hot new style is the right one for you?

In general, we find that many of our clients are actually concerned about NOT making a decision based on trends. There is a good reason for this, an engagement ring is meant to be worn for a lifetime. It is important to consider how you will feel about your ring ten or fifteen years from now.

So how do you know if you’re drawn to a style because it’s “trendy” or if you’re drawn to it because it really speaks to you? Honestly, the question may be the answer. If you are asking the question it means there is some doubt in your mind and it’s best to explore all of the options before making a decision.

How do you Explore the Options?

The best way is to try on different kinds of engagement rings. First, start with the designs you are drawn to and see how you feel about them. We’ve all been in that situation where we see something online that we love but when we go to try it on, it doesn’t quite work for us. Give yourself time to explore, you may surprise yourself!

What are Some of the Recent Engagement Ring Trends?

Toi et Moi Engagement Rings

A Toi et Moi engagement ring is a ring that features two gemstones rather than one. Hence the “Toi” (you) and “Moi” (me). It has been said to originate with the engagement ring Napoleon gave Josephine to symbolize their partnership. They have regained popularity due to the recent engagement rings of some well known celebrities.

Sometimes the gemstones will be of the same type and size, or sometimes they will be different. Sometimes they will be set on a bypass band (the bands of the ring slightly “bypass” each other) and sometimes they may be set right beside each other in a traditional ring.

Dainty Engagement Rings

Very fine, dainty engagement rings have also been very popular in recent years. Quite often they will also have a vintage inspired feel. We’ve found many of our clients asking for very thin ring bands, fine claws and minimal amounts of metal.

While we can appreciate this aesthetic, it is also important to remember than your engagement ring is meant to last a lifetime. It must be able to endure the bumps and bruises of everyday life. The metal of your engagement ring will wear over time. This is especially true of the claws or prongs holding in your gemstones. If these claws get worn away, your stone will fall out.

It is important to incorporate a certain amount of metal in your engagement ring, right from the start, so that we can be confident of in its structural integrity. We feel that is it important to always be open and transparent with our clients about any potential issues. This way you can make an informed decision.

Teal Sapphire Engagement Rings

The popularity of teal sapphire engagement rings can be directly attributed to the raise in popularity of sapphires from Montana. Although teal sapphires come from many parts of the world, the sapphires in Montana are very often a beautiful teal colour.

We have found that the colour teal is really rather subjective. Some of our clients prefer a greenish-blue teal and others a blueish-green teal. If you are interested in teal sapphires it would be helpful to ask yourself which shade of teal you prefer. Keep in mind that the colour and saturation of the stone may change depending on the light. Teal sapphires (and many other shades of sapphire to) will look different in indoor light versus outdoor light.

Alternative Diamond Engagement Rings

We have seen an explosion in alternative diamond engagement rings recently. But what is meant by alternative diamond?

Alternative diamonds may include: salt & pepper diamonds, rustic diamonds, rose cut diamonds and portrait cut diamonds. What they all have in common is that they are non-traditional diamonds. Whereas the traditional diamond is a clear, white, round, facetted stone, non-traditional diamonds may feature inclusions (salt & pepper), be opaque (some rustic diamonds), have a rose cut (a very old method of cutting) or portrait cuts (a very new style of cutting that is very thin).

But What if I do want to Re-Make my Engagement Ring One Day?

Here’s the good news. Gold and gemstones can always be repurposed to create something else. Over the years we have helped countless people reuse their engagement rings to create a new ring. We’ve seen everything from fine, antique rings to bold, modern designs and are able to repurpose them to suit your preferences and lifestyle.

So, do Engagement Ring Trends Matter?
